Introduction to Artful Tranquility
Welcome to Artful Tranquility, where we will combine watercolor and doodling into a creative practice designed to relieve stress and anxiety.
My name is Jen Vax and I will be your guide on this artful journey. I am not an art therapist but I know first hand how something as simple as playing with watercolor and doodling on a page can ease my anxiety and help me work through the stress of my life.
My mind is constantly running and I often find it challenging to focus. To-do lists run through my head. What-if's start flashing in and out over decisions I need to make. Day dreaming of possibilities and what I'd rather be doing can overpower all of it. And then I have to start over to figure out some sort of order to my day. Not to mention the ongoing stressors of life. I don't need to list all of them... do I? It'll just stress you out.
I created this course with you in mind. The person that could use a simple and playful break from the world. A creative practice that helps you stay present and that doesn't require art talent. The person who secretly wants to do art but needs a simple, non-stressful start. I combined simple watercolor painting and doodling into a delightful course.
Why watercolor and doodling?
Watercolor painting and doodling can be therapeutic and stress-relieving activities for several reasons.
Mindfulness and Focus
Both watercolor painting and doodling require concentration on the present moment. Focusing on the colors, textures, brushstrokes, lines and marks can help redirect your thoughts away from stressors and promote mindfulness. Yes, you can also doodle with watercolor. (mind. blown.)
Relaxation Response
The act of painting can trigger the relaxation response in the body. Focusing on the rhythmic movements of the brush, the flow of colors, and the overall creative process can help reduce stress levels. Doodling has the same effect. The repetitive, rhythmic activity of doodling may activate the parasympathetic nervous system, leading to a relaxation response and a decrease in anxiety levels.
Stress Reduction through Play
Doodling and watercolor doodling is a playful and spontaneous activity that can act as a brief escape from the demands of everyday life. Engaging in a low-pressure, enjoyable task can provide a mental break and contribute to stress reduction. We are going to play a LOT in this class.
Expressive Outlet
Artistic expression provides a healthy outlet for emotions. Through watercolor painting and doodling, you can express your feelings, thoughts, and experiences in a non-verbal and creative way, allowing for emotional release.
Creativity and Imagination
Engaging in a creative process stimulates the imagination. Doodling allows you to explore your imagination in a non-verbal way. Watercolors allow for experimentation with color blending, techniques, and forms, encouraging you to explore your creative side and step outside the boundaries of everyday thinking.
Sensory Engagement
The sensory experience of working with watercolors, including the feel of the brushes, the flow of the water, the scent of the paint, and the visual appeal of the colors, can engage your senses and create a calming environment.
Non-judgmental Space
The exercises we do in this class can be done without a strict focus on perfection. There are no right or wrong ways to create art, and this lack of judgment allows for a more relaxed and enjoyable experience. We are striving for imperfection. Let is allll go.
Distraction from Stressors
Immersing yourself in the creative process of watercolor painting can provide a temporary escape from the stresses of daily life. It allows you to redirect your attention to a positive and enjoyable activity.
Time for Self-Care
Taking time to engage in activities you enjoy, such as doodling in your handmade art journal (that we make in this class) is a form of self-care. It provides an opportunity to prioritize your well-being and create a healthy balance in your life.
I hope you enjoy this class and it brings you daily enjoyment.
